The Evolution of the Birthday (for me)

birthday 1Growing up, I welcomed birthdays with enthusiastically open arms. I would go to bed the night before, anticipating the next day like it was Christmas. I could hardly sleep!

presentsBirthdays meant presents. And a party at Chucky Cheese or my house with my 10 bestest friends in the whole world.

And, one of my favorite parts….

the CAKE! birthday 2 I always chose yellow cake with chocolate frosting. And ice cream. (That’s not actually me in the picture, though I make the same expression when I see cake).

Now, birthdays are completely different. I don’t welcome them with the same enthusiastically open arms. I don’t get pretty, wrapped presents. And, most of the time, I don’t even have cake.

I’m just thankful that I get to celebrate another one each year, even though I’m not happy that the number of candles keeps climbing. Shawn still gets me some presents, usually something I need but hate buying for myself, days or weeks in advance. It’s not wrapped for later. I get it right then. There is no party. Typically, Shawn takes me out for a nice dinner and we do some activities. This year, he’s taking me to dinner at the Blue Lemon, followed by the Utah Symphony (tonight, with some friends – can’t wait!) and Shrek the Musical (tomorrow afternoon).

For me, birthdays have evolved from “me, me, me”, presents and short lived excitement to sharing experiences and time with loved ones and making memories. Those are the things that I truly get excited about for my birthday.

With that, I Wish A Big HAPPY 30-SOMETHING BIRTHDAY TO MYSELF! It’s going to be a great day!!

Do You Even Lift, Bro? – Gym Fail #371 & 697

We have a double wammy today! A bi-fecta, so to speak!

So I’m at the gym this morning, doing legs (one of my favorite days!) and I’m dragging a**. It’s been a long week…. So… I make my way over to the leg extension machine, pound out 3 of my 5 sets, all the while counting down the reps until I’m done because I feel like a quickly deflating balloon when *bam*, I see it. The lurker. You know, that person who hovers around, looking like they want to ask something.

gym lurkers

We make eye contact (I’m mid-set mind you) and I get the gesture. You know, the waving hand while mouthing something I can’t make out. (Keep in mind, I have earphones in. For a reason.) I stop my set, take my earphones out and ask what’s up. Lurker says “How many more sets do you have left?” To be fair, this is proper gym etiquette; however, not DURING a set. Fail #1. I tell him I have a few more sets. In trying to hurry, I decide to do drop sets with minimal wait time in between, clean the machine when I’m done then go across the gym to use the calf machine. It only takes 2-3 minutes, tops, to reach said machine, put weight on and sit down.

As I sit down to start my set, I see Lurker. Except he’s not on the leg extension machine. He’s switched gears entirely and is now doing pull-ups on the assisted pull-up machine.

seriouslySeriously? You interrupt my set, make me rush through my remaining 2 sets, just to do one set on the machine? Fail #2. Because squeezing in that really intense quad workout before moving on to back provides optimal gains….

Happy Bi-Fecta Friday! Good thing he didn’t attempt this faux-pas yesterday, on Throat-Punch Thursday 🙂

Lovin’ My New Gym Kicks!

Every year between December and March, marks the migration period to new gym shoes. This is a love/hate relationship, one that I look forward to and dread at the same time. I’m not a fan of shoe shopping (shocking for a girl, I know!) and I’m not a fan of spending a lot of money on shoes. Sounds like a lose/lose situation right? But I love it! I love the feeling of a fresh start with new workout shoes. The extra cushiony feel of the shoe, before it starts to wear down over the next year. My feet love it, too! And I love investing in good, quality shoes that help me succeed at my #1 passion: fitness!

Here are my new gym kicks – the Mizuno Wave Rider. My new love. This is the updated version of the shoe I purchased last winter. Love the shoe and LOVE the color! *sigh* I’ve been breaking them in all week and loving it! And did I mention that I love them? 🙂

Oh Glorious Pizza…

I love pizza. Dominoes, Papa Murphy’s and Tony’s Pizza are my top picks. Those can get pretty pricey and I can easily get out of control with the portions. Did I mention that I love pizza? The last year, the hubby and I have tried different versions of our homemade pizzas and I actually crave these MUCH more than any pizza joint. For our date night in last Friday, we decided to make pizzas. YUUMMMM!!! Here’s a picture of our finished version.

Oh yes, one of those babies was all mine! 😀 It looks really red because we mixed the sauce, peppers and cheese together before spreading on the tortilla. Topped them with turkey bacon and pepperoni and viola! Individual pizzas that just make my mouth water. Mmmmm….
